My dad has this 470 that he bought new about 1970,
It runs good but has always seemed to be hard on clutches,(one about every two or three years), it don't have any brake on the right side, even though it has good pedal, the left side grabs. I am going to try to fix the brakes on this thing before he gets hurt with it,(he refuses to park it and use a newer tractor). I would like to know what I am getting into on this job and would love to see any diagrams of how this thing is put together. I would really appreciate any help Bill.

This is not a complicated brake system. They are dry brakes with mechanical accuators. If the differential shaft seals are leaking oil into the brake housing, they won't stop anything. The balls that actuate the brakes also can rust up and give this type of problem. I'll fax a parts break-down if you'd like. JR

I removed the brake on the left side this afternoon, the linings are about gone. They were a little greasey, the seal is leaking a little. I guess the seal is driven into the square plate on the differential housing. What will I run into replaceing this seal, (ie bearings, bearing race, seals)? I don't have fax but if you could e-mail the brakedown to me at handyfarms@hotmail.com I would really appreciate it.
Also, on the rigth side it has the differential lock, I would like to know how it is put together. When you don't know it is good to find someone who does. Thanks, Bill

Send me your mailing address and I will send the service manual pages on brake re-work. If you pull the square brake plate that holds the differential seal, count the shims behind it and keep them on the corrensponding side. I stock the o-rings and seals if you want them. JR

My mailing address is,
B.R. HANDY
2379 Puckett Rd.
Westfield NC, 27053
Thanks for the help. My dad wants me to buy the linning and reline the drum and shoes myself, which would cost less, the local parts company sells the complete assembly for about $160.00.
I think the reline kit is about $30.00, which way would you advise me to go?
Thanks again, Bill
