Drove a 1070 powershift the weekend. Will shift into 4th, makes thumping noice when let out clutch. I know, take off the cab, split the tractor, replace gears, etc. This tractor has been run like this for 2 years. Hour meter shows more than 7500. Has a nice GB 800 loader. 80% rear rubber. Engine runs strong and started right up, minimal smoke. Late 70's.

1. They want $3500.00, reasonable?

2. Anyone repaired 4th on this transmission?

3. Reverse whines, this normal?

A great deal, price is on target and engine is good shape. The thumping noise sounds like a gear missing some teeth. Should'nt be hard to fix. The 1070 is a terrific tractor with lots of power, superb reliability, and low fuel consumption. If you turbocharge it you will get even more power and better fuel economy.

Sounds like a good deal. As for the trans problem, there is most likely a tooth -tooth's off of the GEAR on the PINION SHAFT 4 Gear [driven gear- size about 6 in across it / being driven by the gear on the top ,input shaft sliding about 12 in across it ] The cause for what you have found wrong is Some One Ground it in to 4 th range and took some teeth off one off the gears , MOST All The Ones I have seen are on the pinion [ 6 in gear]

That sounds pretty cheap to me I'd buy two at that price. I have a 970 that we've had since 1974, it runs great. Not sure what the thump is that your talking about. Is it when your pulling away in 4th or while your driving down the road you can hear a constant thumping noise? You may want to find an old Case expert to go for a drive with you.

The 1070 is probably one the better tractors Case made back in the 70's. I wouldn't mind finding another one that isn't beat up. You can get aftermarket cab interior kits along with seat cusion kits for them.

Yes you can do a (more or less) complete transmission overhaul with out pulling the cab. It will require some headstands working through the floor plate and transmission top cover. If there is a problem with a gear on the main shaft (pinion shaft) you'll have to slip the axles out of the bull gears and then pull the breaks, etc.

Actually that was the sales pitch when the 70 series were new. You never have to remove the cab to overhaul the transmission like an IH or JD. When the 12,13 & 1570's came out that was still true, of course you did have to remove the transmission/rear axle housing from the cab/platform (is there a distinction?).

If you have a thump or noise only in 4th gear only you most likely have a missing or damaged tooth on the counter shaft or slider gear. Look for shrapnel in the oil, pull the pto cover to find any loose teeth or parts. Seems like any visual inspection on a 970 or 1070 has to be down through the top.

All of our Case's whine in reverse, seems normal to me. The higher the gear the louder the whine too. As far as the noise from 4th, you got me. That price seems about right with the loader and if the rest of the tractor is in good shape. Including the cab, tires, and motor. I'd try to get them to come down, You know, the tranny is messed up!

It whines in reverse because its powershift its normal. as for the 4th gear you don't have to pull the cab off. Use cab jacks and hold the front up and pull the powershift clutch pack and stuff out. I think you might be able just to split between the engine and trans but don't quote me on this i have never actually replaced any gears just powershift. you might have to split between the engine and then the trans and rearend. Someother people will be of more help.
