1370 PTO questions

Our 1370 has the 1000 rpm PTO (I think they all had that). I am thinking of making a converter for it, to reduce it to a 540 rpm PTO. Several questions...

What's the torque rating on the 1000 rpm PTO? I was going to put in a shear pin to protect against overtorque, but need some info re: what to put in there.

Is the direction of the 1000 prm unit the same as the 540 rpm standard?

Lastly, I was going to build something that would be self-contained, filled with gear oil. I was planning on using the timing gears from an engine (maybe a 504) to supply the speed reduction. Any comments?

TIA...

Running it slow will work but make sure it has some load on it. I ruined the motor in my 1370 by running at dead idle for about a month on a water pump that was made for 540. Had to do it as the crops were burning and it would pump all the water I could stand at slow idle. It was so choked up by the time I finished the turbo wouldn't turn and the engine couldn't breath deep enough to even speed up over 900 RPM.

Brent,

I am with Don. I think you have two options. Depending on the task, run the 1370 a 1000 RPM or so to keep the PTO at half speed and install a 21 spline to 540 conversion. The 1370 has more than enough snap to handle most 540 tasks anyway. The power is staggering so be careful. This is how I mow with a 1370 and a 10 mower. The tractor does not use alot of fuel either becasue it is not wound out. Or, a nice 970 or 870 probably would do what you needed to do and has the stock 540 PTO. Just my two cents...

The rotation is the same for 1000 and 540. I doubt that timing gears would stand up to that kind of power. Maybe p.t.o. gears from a different tractor. I would look for a older tractor that has 540. 2 tractors is twice as much fun anyways.
