Convert Ag Axle to CK Axle?

I have a Case 430 diesel with the adjustable row crop front axle. I would like to be able to add a front-end loader. I understand that some folks have found the ag axle (particularly the center mount) to be a break point - even without a loader.

So - two questions:
1) Has anyone tried or heard of replacing the ag axle w/ the heavier construction axle? Is it a bolt-on proposition or is surgery required? Any advice?
2) Any suggestions for sources for the loader? This is mainly to be used for gravel, manure, & snow.

Thanks for any feedback,
Ben

Hi, What you are proposing can get to be a lot more of a job than it first appears. The whole support piece from the engine forward has to be changed, and I do not think, no make that pretty sure, the old grille tin will fit. Also, all the true CK's had full hydrostatic steering, so you have to change all that, from the steering wheel on down. The only reason to try this, would be if you had 2 or more parts machines lying around and had the parts books and time to build one CK configured tractor. I saved some time and bought a 530 that had a bad engine and good loader and hoe. I'm sooooo happy. The guys at Case in those days did some good design work and made a real loader-backhoe machine on the 530 and then 580 series. There are some 430 and 480 CK's around, just a lighter duty version. You can see some differences when they are side by side, like smaller diameter hyd cyl rams. To sum up, if you want a good loader tractor, find a good CK and in the long run you will be ahead. George

This brings up the question of just how strong is the axle of my 311. I noticed when I bought it, that the adjustable axle was about a 1/4 inch smaller than the one on a 351 setting beside it. Could there be different versions? And Jim, where was the crack? I could reinforce it befor bad things happen. I intend only a light loader and to not mistreat it.

Just looked at my 300. Front axle has a reinforce like a third of a piece of pipe about 2 foot long, a good 1/4 inch thick, welded to the bottom of the axle. Would this be factory or home made. I can't tell for the paint. All so, mine hangs by 2 points. I saw one that only supported by one side. I think I am good for about any load.

I have the same tractor as you ,with a case loader, and when I got it the axle had been reinforced with a welded on curved patch where it had cracked.
I have used it for alot of heavy digging and carrying dirt and it has not given any more problems.
