We have a case 580 e 2wd diesel backhoe at my work. i went to plow snow with it today and it started up fine, ran for about 20 min. then kept stalling like someone shut the key off. sometimes it will start right back up, but it will quit again.. other times it won't do anything. I changed the fuel and air filters but that hasent helped any.. it has done this before during the summer so i don't have a clue what it might be now.. thanks for any advice

Just wondering if John ever solved his fuel problem or if anyone else has any ideas. I have Cae 580 Super D hoe, it hs always started and run fine till a week ago. It was a very hot day and it after using it for an hour or so it started to die out and eventually stall like it wasnt getting fuel. It would restart fine but only run for a few minutes and then die again. I changed both fuel filters, pulled all the supply lines off and checked for dirt as well as the valve at the bottom of the tank. There is lots of fuel flow when I open the drains on the fuel filters or disconnect the line at the injector pump inlet all the time even right after it dies out. I jumpered a 12 volt wire directly from the battery to the solenoid on the pump in case it was an electrical problem but no better. I left it till the next day and it started and ran fine for about 30 minutes then same problem. Tried again the next day, same thing, ran fine for about 45 minutes and then started to die out. Restarts fine but dies again in less than a minute. Don"t know what to check next other than have the injector pump serviced or replaced

Any ideas would be appreciated before I go that route. Gary

My 580 Super E did the same thing twice and both times it was the mechanal fuel pump on the side of the motor.

Have you checked the fuel shutoff solenoid, key switch and/or the wiring going to it? Now, don't hold me to this, because its been a few years...but it seems like when the fuel solenoids USUALLY fail, they fail for good, not intermittently as you are describing. (But, never say never or always, right? ;) ) Next time it quits running, you might take a test light, and see if the wire going to the fuel pump is hot or not. If its not, you're getting close to the problem. If it is hot, and you have fuel to the inj pump, and none coming out, I'd suspect the solenoid. Just a guess...Dale

I had a tractor which did exactly the same thing, including in summer. The problem was the check valve in the fuel return line to the tank. There is a little ball in the valve mounted in the bottom of the fuel tank which keeps the tank from draining by gravity if the return line is damaged. The ball was sometimes jamming, causing the fuel pump to shut itself down to prevent damage. If your Case has a similar setup, you can test it by disconnecting the tank end of the return line and putting it into a 5-gallon pail--engine should run properly with no back pressure in the return line. If so, take the check valve out and replace or discard the little ball.

Might have a line plugging up with debris. Had same problem with one sometime ago. A small piece of trash was wedge in the intake side of fuel pump that would block fuel just enough to cause pump to cavitate and injector pump would lose its prime. Are you in real cold country and are certain your fuel is not gelling up?

the temperature has been in the teens. i put anti gel in the tank so there should be no gelling problem.. when i pulled the lines there was plenty of fuel dripping out

mine did that to i took the petcock out of the bottom of the tank it was plugged where the dirt settles to the bottom of that sediment can. then unhooked the line at the pump and blew some air thru it thatwas partly plugged to
