It appears that the hydraulic oil is getting into the gear oil on my 430 LCK. Tractor has a triple range(12spd) trans.. Checked gear oil level the other day to find it way overfull. Likewise, hydraulic oil level was low. Could it be a bad seal between the torque tube and the tranmission? Is the hydraulic oil level high enough to drain into the gear case? Or, could it be the hydraulic cylinder for the 3 point hitch leaking into the gear case. I drained almost 10 gallons out of the gear case. It only took about 4 gallons of clean gear oil to refill it to the full mark on the dipstick. I topped off the hydaulic oil to the full mark also. I should be able to determine how bad the leak is by watching both levels. I'm thinking that if it leaks a gallon or two of hydraulic oil into the gear case over a year or so its not really a big deal. Just don't want gear oil in the hydraulic system. Would an overfilled gear case affect the rear brakes? Any suggestion or ideas would be helpful.

You could pull the triple range cover, then add hyd oil till it covers the seal between the transmission. Let it sit and see what happens.
My 311b did the same thing, since it is in restoration I did both the seals and the lift cylinder. Cylinder fix was not to hard.

It could be either one of the things you mentioned. Does oil leak into the brakes through the differential seals? Sometimes, even if you put in new differential seals and the hydraulic cylinder is leaking bad enough , they will still leak when the oil gets too full. This is not real hard too fix. About 45.00 worth of parts and about 3 hours labor. If a seal is leaking in the transmission, now thats a different story. Splitting the tractor, taking gears out, etc. Lots of time involved.

The gear case was very overfull, twice the normal level. I have not taken the brake covers off to see if they are wet with oil. The brakes seem to work fine at this time. I guess I'm wonder which leak (tranny seal or hyd. cylinder) is more likely to happen. Maybe I'll just start with the easy one (hyd. cylinder) first.

Dave could be right on the leaky seal. But it could also be the hyd. cylender for the draft arms. Do they leak down? If the differential seals are good, it shouldn't affect the brakes. My "350" leaks back also, so I use 85W140 gear oil in the hyd- triple range housing. Hydraulics work great. John

I seem to recall placing a jackstand under my mower last summer to keep it in the up position so I guess yes, the draft arms leak down a bit. Sounds like it could be that cylinder. Never heard of using gear oil in the hydraulic system, not sure about that?. I'm not so worried about TCH(transmission/hydraulic) oil in the gear case, just need to watch the level so the brakes don't flood. Roger

I had the same problem with my 630. It turned out to be the seal on the PTO input shaft. If you look in the filler hole for the differential you may be able to see the seal carrier right beside the hole. If the level in the diff is right you should be able to see if the seal is leaking. I think it will leak if the the tractor is running or not. I ran the tractor for the better part of the first year I had it with the two oils at the same level because the fine fellow I brought it from told me it was normal. The biggest problem I had with it was that with all that oil in the differential and four speed it kept jumping out of reverse. Now that I've got seal changed and the correct oils in the two places things work much better.

I'll give that a try. The gear oil is at the correct level now. I service the tractor back in August and I notice the gear oil was overfull. Not sure why I didn't look further into at that time. Since then the hydraulic oil has dropped about 2 quarts. Hour meter shows 5 engine hours since the service.
