I set all valves at 0.010" cold. Is this correct for a kerosene head? My neighbor thinks the engine sounds like they are too tight. Does anyone know where I can find a screw-on type sediment bowl for this tractor?

The Tune Up Guide on this site indicates .010" cold is correct. It's always good to check another source if in doubt. If they are too tight, you don't want to run the engine. I have seen a SC in good condition that ran very quietly. The bigger engines like my Ls and LAs make a lot of interesting noise.

Hi Myron,

Sorry I couldn't answer your earlier questions about the heat valve setting on the kerosene manifold. I guess that the settings are just trial and error.

As far as I know- they don't give you a specific engine temperature when it's O.K. to start vaporizing the kerosene.... I think it's just "operating temperature."

I don't have my service manual here at work with me- so I can't tell you what the valve setting for the SC is. The DC valves are set to 0.018"... so your neighbor may be right about 0.10" being too tight.

Here's a link to a website that I use. You can find the sediment bowl listed under

"PART NO. CASE TRACTORS - MODEL C,CC,D,DC"

A31102 Fuel strainer /sediment bowl C,D,L,S...

I also checked the YTMAG store, but didn't see one for sale there.

Hope this helps, -Schotte

Mike,
My LA's are all set at .018 and seem to work fine. On the kerosene one, the heat baffle in the intake manifold is stuck (rusted I suppose) in the kerosene position, but all I do is saw one log or even just two slabs and then switch it to kero from gas and it purrs right along like no tomorrow, which might be the case if we hit Iraq. I'm thinking of converting my 'new' '49 to kero once I get it going. I like the way they run on kero, even at $2.00 a gallon. My 2 cents.

Hi Ralph,

Why do you like the way the LA runs on kerosene? You should have lower horsepower that way.

Just curious- I've never run one of the dual fuel models... The manifold on my '45SC is ruined, so I had planned over to switch to a gas manifold if I ever got it unsuck.

Hi Mike,
Well I don't know if it's true or not but I think the LA likes the lead in the kero. It just seems to sound better, run smoother, use less fuel per hour and so on. Actually it's probably just because I'm stubborn and like to see things run like they used to in the days between steam and diesel. Now I bet somebody is going to get on here and tell me that the EPA no longer lets 'em put lead in kero. I don't know about the decrease/increase in horsepower. I run my board planer, as you know, with a '41 LA and that one burns gas, and I think it has less power than the mill one which is a '51, same age as me. Of course both of these engines are stationary and are run at a constant rpm, unlike the use in a tractor, with varying speeds and workloads. Don't know if that helps, but I sure did have verbal diahrea didn't I!?
