I have a 1957 Case 401 diesel. Starts and runs great. However I have notice that I am getting what appears to be diesel fuel in the crankcase oil. Any ideas as where this may be coming from? Cleaned and/or replace all fuel filters. This is a great running machine, need to get this problem in check.

I have the same issue with my 401. The leak is around the shaft of the impeller in the transfer pump. It can be fixed by replacing the seal, but I just change the oil frequently. I can use a lot of oil for what a pump overhaul will cost down in Pueblo. My shop manual says to add diesel to the oil in really cold weather anyway, so I don't think it is hurting much as long as I keep fresh oil in it.

Chuck, I've got a 76 Case 1370 that was doing the same thing, it has the inline Bosch pump, I had the local mechanic replace it & that cured it, oil level has stayed put since. The injection service place said seals were out of it. Cost me $600 but that's a LOT cheaper than an overhaul..... ...Roger

If it has the American Bosch injection pump, fuel can leak past the transfer pump shaft seal. From there, it enters the lube oil part of the pump, thus raising crankcase level.

I don't know about the American Bosch pump, but if that was the problem on a German Bosch pump you would need to replace an o-ring. You would need the o-ring, a gasket, and about 30 minutes.

Sometimes poor injectors can do it. Spray pattern doesn't atomize the fuel well and so it does not burn completely. Fuel on top of the piston has to go somewhere, down is the logical choice. Hence, fuel in the crankcase. How long has it been since the injectors were serviced?
