I went to a consignment sale here in Ohio on saturday. They had a 511B gas w/ eagle hitch and narrow front there. It looked all orgianl except for the hood, pretty straight tin. Ran good. I had never seen one before, are they that rare of a tractor? It had a hydraulic blade that came with it, it sold for $1,050.

Maybe you guys can help me figure out which model Case I have. I may well be a 511b. I think it is a '59 or '60, and has a wide front end that is adjusable. It gas and has the eagle hitch. I susect that the engine is a g164, but I'm not for sure about that. Any clues of what I should look for to help nail this down.

Thanks

Frank

The 164 is unmistakeable in that the left side of the engine has a bolt on cover about 5 x 18 over the water jacket of the motor. The generator bracket is mounted on it. The 164 was used on the 351s in 1957 and the 500B and 600Bs in 58 and 59.

Jim,

I went to the barn and sure enough it has that water jacket with the generator bracket onto it. When I got the tractor back in 95 the generator was not working and was not salvagable, so I fitted the old girl with an alternator. Is there a difference between a 511b and a 500b, or is the difference limited to the type of front end they put on it?

Frank

I think the difference is in the front and rear axles.

I take it there is no serial number tag? That is on the left just below the steering wheel. If that is not there the next guess would be the casting number off the engine block I think. That should confirm the engine.

John,

I think the tag is long gone. The engine block does have a casting number (C 2000) on the right side.

Bob; I was at the sale Saturday and saw the 511b. Looked like a decent tractor. Had all the matal and covers. Would need tires. Had low speed transmission. Looked like it had done duty cleaning feedlots. Was a good buy for someone. Did you buy it? Gene

I have a '59 511B that I purchased from Tom Jones through an ad on this site. There were 630 and 851 Gas/GP models built in 1958 and 1959 respectively. I haven't had an opportunity to work with it, yet, but it drew a lot of admirers at the Almelund Threshing Bee (MN) last summer. I'm biased, of course. (A lot of folks sat on it for photographs, etc, so I presume they liked it.) I paid a LOT more for mine than $ 1050.00!

Mine starts hard and from what the previous owner said, it always has been hard to start. The starter motor turns over slower than I would like, so I took it apart and found a few electrical connections that were not too good so I reworked them. That helped some. A good hot battery improves it some also. The trick that seems to work best, no mater how warm or cold the weather is, is to pull the choke all the way out (on) before I turn the key. Then while I am cranking, and after no more than 3 or 4 second, I punch the choke all the way off. If it does not catch right away, I stop and give it a minute and then do it again. After it has been running for a while and I turn it off, it seems to start right up if I leave the choke off when I crank it up.

Good Luck

i've found/used the same tips. We have two of them on the farm and had to do the same thing to both-use the choke and have a really good battery.

Kim, It needs a little choke on starting, even in warm weather. But, I don't have a lot of experience with it, having just bought it last spring. (Tractor's in MN and I'm in WA State.) Pulled some hayloads with it, otherwise, it's only been used in parades.
