I am restoring a 1950 Case SC. I have torn down the engine and determined that the rod journals need to be turned. I am working in limited space so splitting the tractor and removing the engine will be difficult. Is it possible to remove the crankshaft without removing the engine? If so, how do I do it? Thanks

Thanks for your input guys. I haven't been available for a few days, sorry for the delay in replying to your comments. One rod bearing has "wiped" and by my measurement is .010 under spec. I measure .005 under spec on the others with one having some serious pitting. Since I am new at this I won't feel comfortable ordering bearings until I get a real machinist to look at it. Again, thanks for your help.

Hey Rob, I have a brand new set of rod bearings that I bought for a 1948 Case SC that are made by Federal Mogul. After further investigating, I came to the conclusion that I was not going to mess with that 48 model case and sold the tractor but I still have the bearings. I had to pay $50 per rod or $200 for the set. I am never going to use these bearings so if your interested, I will make you a good deal. They are .010 over standard. Part #1370 SB 10.

E-mail me if your interested,
Morgan

Before you get too far into your project make sure you can get bearings. I just helped my brother on SC we had to grind crankshaft .020. Rod brgs are only available from Federal Mogul. Expect to pay $40-$50 for each rd brg . Main brgs are not available .Your old brg shells will need to be repoured to semi finish. To do the job right they need to be align bored in the block. You will pay$200 - $400 main brgs rebabbiting. Align boring will vary in price. Check with your local machine shop.Caution we had trouble with the babbited brg shells the flange brg was distorted from the 600 deg temp. in the rebabbiting process. Real expensive SC case. Earl

I've just gone through a '52 SC that was siezed and I am curious how bad your rod journals are... I found one set of rod bearings that were different from the others and thought maybe my tractor had spun a rod bearing. None of the journals were perfect but I polished them with crocus cloth and checked them with plasti-gage. Put it back togather and never even looked at the mains. I think my oil pressure was around 25-28 psi. I've only run it a few times since this work last Fall. Good Luck ...

The only way I have ever removed a crankshaft is splitting the tractor to be able to take the flywheel off. Some parts get expensive. Good Luck on your overhaul.
