3 PT Problem on Case 1210

I am purchasing a Case 1210, 65 hp 1974(?) model. Everything works except the 3 PT. The seller said his mechanic said it was stuck because it had been used for mowing, and that it would probably free up if I "tapped" the valves under the small cover. Does this sound right, or might I be looking at a bigger repair bill?

Thanks,

Rick

I suggest making the sale contingent on the 3pt working. Have the seller bring the mechanic out to the tractor. If the 3pt works after the mechanic taps the valves under the small cover, then buy the tractor. Otherwise look elsewhere. If the hydraulics have been neglected, then you've got water, rust, and dirt gumming up the control valve to the point of having to replace it. Count on paying big bucks for a new control valve.

I don't see how mowing could cause the 3pt. not to work. The reason they don't work on the David Brown tractors is because of neglect/dirt in the hydraulic system.

You need to remove the cover. Remove the slotted caps on the spool valves one at a time, and pull them out. Clean them and make sure they move freely. Be careful not to lose any small pieces. If I remember correctly, the caps are holding against spring pressure. It will fly apart if you are not careful as you take them out.

You need to make a wooden dowel which is tapered on one end. Gently force it into the spool after you remove the slotted cap, then you will be able to pull the spool out.

Your next step will be to replace the hytran filter and keep the fluid clean.

Elmer is the pro here, he taught me how to do this. He may suggest other things for you to check.

I would suggest an owners manual or repair manual if you are not familiar with the hydraulic 3pt. system.

I would listen to the advice given by James then if you decide to buy the tractor, by all means get copies of all the manuals from Elmer. I recently recieved a complete set of manuals (owners guide, parts book and repair manuals) for both 880 and 990 from Elmer. Absolutely great copies from a great guy!
