Case 1955 VA1 coil

This system is an original 6 volt and the coil has gone kaput- on owner over 100 miles from me so I get a "Service call" since they are relatives. My question to the group is can the 6 volt coil be replaced with a 12 volt coil? -which I have plenty of on hand.

unfortunately no. it wont create a strong enough spark. check your local NAPA. they can get them pretty quick.

If Loren has a 12V coil requiring an external resistor, I always understood it was really a 6V coil & should work,in a 6V system without the resistor, Am I correct? John

umm. if your talking about the ballast resistor the old dodges used to have im not sure if it will work. theyre designed to reduce output voltage after the car was started. the resistor was bypassed during starting via the ignition switch then once the starter was disengaged power flowed through the resistor. Chrysler's theory was you needed a stronger spark during start up to boost the engine into running. once it was running, the high voltage spark wasnt necessary.

a 12V coil has more windings for higher output. if you introduce a lower voltage source to the coil, the increased amount of windings also creates a higher resistance within the coil, therefore giving you a less than satisfactory spark. w/ or w/o the resistor its not going to give you what your looking for.

maybe im wrong but it sounds good doesn't it?

That was my point, use the coil and throw the resistor away.
