I have a Case 300 with the gas engine and I'm doing a valve job on the head, I have two questions. What are the head bolts torqued to? What is the procedure to torque them, start in the middle and work out etc.... and shouldn't the washer under the bolts be hardened? And (I actually have more than 2 questions, :-} ) how do you torque the hex nuts on the right hand side?? I can barely get a box wrench on them let alone a torque wrench. Also, what do I adjust the valves to and is there a certain procedure for this?? I can hardly wait for your comments. ONce I get the head back on this tractor I'm going to post a picture , I think you-all will like what you see. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Wally, to expand some on Jim & Mikes comments, either grade 5 or 8 washers are fine, narrow washers that fit flat in the recesses. Set valves cold, #1 near tdc set both int & exh @ 0.014”, same with 3-4-2 @ half revolution intervals. Case p/n for the torque ext is CAS1257 or snap-on p/n S8663B. We used to call these “under rkr arm ext”. Joe

I've used grade 8 nuts and washers on mine. The nuts are 1/2 SAE and use a 3/4 wrench instead of the orginal 11/16. I've had good luck using an aircraft 3/4 wrench for installing thier clinders

head bolt torque: 60-65 ft/lbs
sequence: looking from right side of tractor:
11----5---2---6----12
13-9-7-3-1-4-8-10-14
washers: i dont have any info that says they should be hardened. im sure regular ones are ok.
nuts on lower stage of head: case lists a special tool (T-132) that looks like a chev distributor bolt wrench. Case may have an updated part# for this tool to order but if its discontinued you may have to see a snap-on/mac tools salesman. you could even borrow one from an IHCase mechanic if hes nice.

hope this helps! its the same engine as a VA.

good luck!

mike
