My experience with that motor would tell you to look at the very thin metal on the block between the sleeves at the top. I've had two of them broken there and let the block actually sink causing a leak.

I bought a 430 parts tractor a couple of years ago that had been sitting about 15 years. It had a fresh rebuilt engine with about 10 work on it when it was run hot and cracked the head. I forget where the cracks were but he machine shop magnafluxed it and it was obvious. If you need a head I have a late model head for sale.

Roger; Don't know how familiar you are with any CASE diesel, but none of them like ether. The only thing I use ether for is for mounting truck tires. The symptons you describe could come from the head gasket, cracked head, or cracked sleeve. I mentioned ether because of winter & cold weather an all and ether could cause any of the 3. Hope this helps, John

We have had gaskets go bad on 2470's and a 1070 and all looked good. But replacing them fixed the problem. The only cracked heads I've ever had were on a 1030 that had a turbo added, and the cracks were always visible.
