My 400 diesel has a small amount of oil leaking from the clutch housing. I'm assuming it is the crankshaft seal. It is not available from my case ih dealer any longer. Any one know where to get one?

If the main bearings are shot, your new seal probably won't last too long. Might want to remove the oil pan and take a large screw driver or bar and see how much play there is between the crankshaft and main bearings.

If i remember right when we replaced ours we got it fron case, it just changed over to a new #. I think the # was actually for a 970, probably the same seal

Two things come to mind. When having oil leakage or consumtion, all ways check the crankcase breather to make sure its not building up pressure in the crankcase. If you replace the seal, try to check the rear main bearing clearance to make sure it is not excesive.

How serious is this leak? Splitting the tractor is a lot of work, I hate leaks myself, but that leak would have to be pretty bad to go through all that. I ordered my rear mainseal from the dealer a year or two ago. I dug out the reciept, part Number is A27838. It is possible that this is the front seal number, but I am pretty sure that it is the rear. If you remove your seal without damaging it you should be able to read numbers on the backside and your local bearing/seal supplier should have it. There is nothing special about it. It is a one piece unit, it presses into a housing on the back of the block. It is important to replace the gasket on the seal housing while you are in there. That's about all I can think of.
