I Just overhauled my A/C system and I am re-charging with 134-A. So far all looks good and the system cools pretty well. The suction line sweats all the way to the compressor. The Hi side is at about 175 lbs and the low side starts at about 24 lbs but slowly goes down to zero while the unit is running. Yet the evaporator is cooling very well. I have so far put four cans in the system. I used a suction pump to evacuate the system before charging. My questions are; Why does my low side go to zero and yet the system appears to be functioning? Also since this is a large system with lines going to the roof, is four cans in the right ballpark? The ambient air temp while charging and looking at the guages was 83 deg. Any advice is much appreciated!

I am having the same problem with my 1070 that I just converted over to 134. Have new drier and expansion valve and pulled the system down. Was wondering if anyone has an answer to this problem or if it is nothing to worry about. I do know the normal rules for a/c filling with 134 and 12 and have never seen a system do this with all new parts for the most part. Any help would be great.

Bud, sounds like you are low on 134, can of 134 has 12 ounces not 16 ounces as one is to believe. You should carry about 32 psi on the low side and a temp out of the ducts at about 50 degrees.Hope this helps you.

Since you have a pressure gauge you dont need to know the exact amount of freon needed. I believe there should be between 40 and 50 psi in the system on the low side. I will have to double check, my gauge has a colored area to tell me what the proper level is. I also like to use an additive you can buy that will help the system acheive lower temps. I think it is called rapid cool or something alike. Let me double check the pressure before you add any more freon.

I've been charging all my R-12 systems with Propane. I add a little extra mineral oil. Propane is more efficient than R-12, and R-12 is more efficient than 134A. Propane will also work in a 134 system, but I haven't needed to charge my 134 yet. John

YOU MUST BE NUTS OR HAVE A DEATH WISH!!!!! ! I have a neighbor that was dealing with an air system that he thought was R12. Turned out someone like you had charged with propane. A leak developed and ignited. He spent several weeks in the hospital with nasty burns, destroyed his shop and the tractor. You might think R134 costs to much, but the alternative could be MUCH higher. PLEASE think of the consequences and the liability. I can't believe you would recommend this to someone else or even admit to doing it yourself!

I AGREE WITH DKase, PUTTING PROPANE IN A MOTOR VEHICILE IS IRRESPONSIBLE NOT TO MENTION ILLEGAL.

I never have used propane in a A/C system. I have several neighbors who do and like it very well. I have used propane to transfer fuel to my Diesel tractors and Gas combine's for 46 years. Have another neighbor who fills all his tires with propane. I won't do that except maybe in a emergency to get back to town.
