To replace the tach drive on a diesel engine do I have to take the engine apart or is there a different way to get it out?

I was very impressed one day when I put out a message for the same help. A gentleman I believed named Kyle came back with this reply.
It's been 20 some years but I believe you take a 3/4 inch fine thread bolt. Drill out the center of the bolt back about and inch to an 1 1/2 inches, Use a piece of pipe large enough to go over the outside O.D of the take drive on the outside of your engine. Use a large washer at the very top of the bolt where the bolthead is. When you screw this into your tach driver and turn the bolt it will suck out the tach driver. I was very impressed with his easily made tool. wish I could remember who he was so I could thank him. Good Luck. Any more questions let me know, I could email you a rough sketch if you would like

Thanks for the tip. I must have to drill out the center of the bolt large enough to go over the cable drive. Let me know if you find out for sure what size thread it is.

Matching up the threads is a little difficult, they are not 3/4 fine. I don't have a manual nearby but it tells what they are. John

John, please let me know the correct thread size, national fine is that the same as fine thread? Have always valued your opinions in the past
Respectfully

Hey men; The thread is 3/4-20thd,extra fine, as opposed to 3/4- 16 thd, National fine. I made a puller using the end from an old cable housing and a pipe nipple cause I couldn't get a 3/4-20 bolt. Hope this helps, John
