I have a 580D that runs great but has NO brakes on the right side, and left side brake works, but wont release all the way and grabs...worse when cold weather. I also found that when I add brake fluid to the master cyl, it soon drains out, leaving it empty.
My question for the forum is : What do I need to fix it? I assume the seal is gone on the right, and maybe a spring or something binding on the left. Anyone offer some help??? Needing to finish grading on my house.....

and yeah, you should put case hy-trans oil in the master cylinders... though any atf or hydraulic oil will generally work.

yep, if you put brake fluid in the master cylinders, you've likely ruined the master cylinders and the brake cylinders. The seals for the brake cylinders are cheap and simple, but that's not the case with the master cylinders. Usually when those actuators don't release, it means that your brakes are worn out and/or oil soaked. I'd reccomend that you don't keep operating it that way for long, because if the brake lining is coming apart, the metal can dig into the brake housing on the transmission, and that is EXPENSIVE (I'm talkin' 1000 bucks new... a few hundred at a salvage yard). I'd reccomend that you take both brake housings off and inspect the brakes. If they're oil soaked, you can change the stub shaft seals easily enough, but there's a small, thin seal that goes between the right side stub shaft and the differential lock shaft. It's a pain in the A$$ to change and I'd not reccomend that you try without the right seal driver.

There's a real thin seal way in there on the shaft - nasty to get out and in

Randy,

The brake disc & drum are probably oil soaked with gear lube from transaxle causing them to slip and/or lock-up. Follow the link provided to a parts brakedown of the brake system. scroll down the page about half way to click the illustration link. It is correct as long as your 580D is not turbocharged.

The 580D uses Case TCH fluid (hydraulic oil) in the brake master cylinders. Standard DOT 3 brake fluid will eat the seals.

Hope this helps, Marc
