Can anyone tell me what years where they produced, engine size and a possible book value? Are they good tractors?

Not to discourage you any but the Maxxum series had 11 safety switches that had to work before the engine could be started and put into the fwd direction. It had a fwd/rev shuttle, four range trans and three speed power shift. The hitch was raised and lowered using a toggle switch and you dialed in the amount of draft you wanted. When these first came out I spent a lot of time training and helping Dealers troubleshoot the electrical system on these units, mainly the trans. If you decide on one, get a multimeter and a Case service manual, I don't think an IT would get it on these for you need the schematics to go along with them. As for power, these were beasts, they would pull an offset 14 foot disk through an orchard like it was pulling an empty trailer. Later versions (91) had the 'Mudder' option with creeper gears for twenty four speeds and the rear rubber was on 54" wheels. The cabs in my opinion were the standard deluxe Case standard which were the best in the industry for comfort and quietness. The windshield was curved to match the curves in the pupil to make it easy on the eyes when driving the tractor all day. I don't have any proof as to the validity but that is what we were told at the time. The engine had a torque rise of 25% which at that time was what most manufacturers were claiming. I do know of one farmer out here in the San Jouquin that straighten the teeth on a three shank ripper so that the teeth ran parallel with the ground and the farmer claimed that the engine only dropped 100 rpm which he mistook as a bubble in the fuel line.

The 5140 was made from 1990 to 1992, It had the 359 CID Case/Cummins Diesel. The 2003 I&T Used Tractor guide "book" price range $16,000 to $29,150 depending on cab, MFWD, condition, etc. It was superseded in 1993 by the 5240 which had similar power. You can check fastline.com to see what going prices for used 5140's are. hope this helps.
