Thanks for all your input about the starter. I had the old one repaired. it needed a new armuture, brushes and bushings It costed $165.00 which was cheap, for being on the tractor since 1969. Bill

If you do have to replace the starter you might want to think about going to a 70 series starter. I have had no trouble with the rebuilder taking the 30 for the core on the 70 series starter. The newer 70 series starter has a much better arrangement on the brush springs so they don't hang up and burn out the armature. You would have to change the drive because the gear is different. When I was running several 30 series tractors it seemed like I was replacing a starter every couple years. I put the 70 series starters on about 10 years ago and havn't replaced one since. If you install a second starter solonoid right down by the starter so the voltage is higher to the original solonoid the contacts in the solonoid will not ark and stick. This will spin the engine faster so it will start better and save your next starter. I hope I didn't confuse you. Post or email if you need further explanation. Good Luck

Hey D. Kase; I've had no problems with the starter on my 730 CK that I owned for 30 years. However the solenoid on my 1175 is a constant source of frustration. But that 2nd solenoid you mention confuses me. How do I wire it in. What type of solenoid?

Remove the wire from the starter switch and attach it to the second solenoid. Run 12 volts to the second solenoid, just like the original one. Run a heavy wire from the output of the second solenoid to the stud on the original, the one that had the original wire. This supplies a better charge to the solenoid than you can get from the smaller, original wire.

Hey Jim; What stops the 2nd solenoid from acting up like the original?

I installed the second solenoid on my 1070.I was having starter solenoid troubles with it also. Our 970 and 2470's don't seem to have this problem.
