Yikes! - If you haven't since been warned, be aware that several people (that I've read of) have been seriously mangled or killed while depending on the positive disengagement of the Case 970 PTO when the tractor engine is running. An alleged design-flaw in the hydraulic control valve allows the PTO to sometimes self-engage, even though the PTO lever appears to be in the OFF position.

One victim is the subject of a recent book, "A Measure of Endurance: The unlikely Triumph of Steven Sharp", by William Mishler. ISBN: 037541133X (There is more technical information in the book about the problem.)

Some information on the court case (appeal) can be seen at:

Best guess is that the PTO is shut off, but the brake is warn so it doesn't stop. Best and safest way to check it is to shut the engine off and hook the PTO up to a fairly heavy pulling implement. Start the engine and my guess is that the PTO will not turn. Good Luck

With the engine off the PTO has to be disengaged because there is no hyd. pressure. That would be the brake holding. It is possible that the brake will not hold the PTO from turning, but it will hold you from turning it. If it is engaged it would be a problem in the hyd. control valve. Possibly an adjustment in the cable control. Good Luck
