I have a case 580, early 70's that I recently purchased. I noticed that the water pump was bad and needed to be replaced. I am about to take a crack at it this weekend and was wondering if this is going to be a difficult project. I think I can get the fan, pulley and pump off without removing the radiator - am I right? The parts place where I bought the water pump said I had a 50/50 chance that it was the right water pump. He said that the size of the propeller on the pump would be the difference. If the old pump has a smaller propeller - would it really matter if I replaced it with a pump that has a larger propeller?

Thanks in advance!

AJ, if you have the diesel, all the impellers are the same. The 159 gas engines sometimes use different impellers in different applications, and sometimes that extra 1/8" will keep it from going into the housing.
Its been a long time since I turned a wrench, but as I recall, it can be done with the rad installed...but it IS a knuckle skinner.
