Can a Case 159 gas engine be replaced by a 188 diesel engine without changes to torque converter, etc? How difficult is it?

The 188 is approx. 1.5 inches longer then the 159cid engine
But it will bolt up just the same.
The 201 cid will also bolt up. (Combine)
But consider any one of the larger motors
And your tin will be too short
And if you put a loader back on you will have To make a few modifications.
So I would say some considerations would need to be addressed here.
Plumbing
Steering Maybe wiring etc.
