Case 680e backhoe

just bought this backhoe and don't know to much about them.i am concerned about the coolant gauge going to the red within a couple of minutes and the coolant in the radiator stays cold.do these normally have a thermostht?the fluid is up and the water pump is not leaking.should i have maybe run it longer? any help would be great. thanks mike

I have a 1978 Case 680E. My heat guage has not worked since I purchased 6 years ago. The rad stays cool and the oil presure stays up. I suspect I have no thermostat or if I do, it is stuck open.
Do you have any signs of engine overheating other than the guage?
