Ok...stupid question. I have a '64 case D530 w/32 backhoe. I'm in the middle of a resurrection and it's the first diesel motor I've ever worked on. Damn thing just won't start. When I crank the motor and put my hand on the exhaust I can feel air suction. My question: does the exhaust valve stay open for part of the intake stroke? or are my valve seats completely wasted?

well, w/ some gas engines, the intake valve opens just before the exhaust valve closes to create an efficiency in burning excess gasses or youve got bad seats on your exhaust valves if you can feel that much suction.

check the gap on your valve rockers. they may not have any but i fear it sounds like a trip to your local macine shop is in order.

check the timing on your injector pump as well. it may be off slightly.

good luck!

Yeah, I have the head off (again) it seems as though the valve seats have some pitting and the angles are rounded. I will take the head down for a valve job (about $60 here in Hawaii). Now, setting the injector timing, that's something I'll have to learn from someone. anyone? :) Thanks for your reply, Mike

umm...

you may have to consult a service manual for that info. im not readily equipped on diesel engines.

good luck
