I have acquired an Case LAE recently, that has a cracked block. It is mostly there, but would be a pretty big job to get a heartbeat out of it. My question is, how rare are they, and it is worth the investment to restore? Or, should I just part it out and find a new toy to play with?

Brian' Any LA is worth saving. I have two LAE's and two LA's. My 1951 has a cracked block. About 15 years ago my brother left pure water in it into October and it froze a "T" - shaped crack in the left side up behind the carburetor. A local welder came up and welded it. To this day, it still weeps moisture but I've been using it for 15 years as a power unit for my Lane #1 sawmill. My wife and I have built 2 houses, a barn, a shed to shelter my board planer and several other things and every time I ask it to work, it does. I swear you can't kill 'em. Good Luck.

Is it because someone didn't have enough anti-freeze in it? The blocks on old Case's are not pressurized, so you can patch them w/epoxy or JB weld. Where is the crack? They will hold if its just a water leak & no oil journals are involved-BTDT. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
