Heres the armored LAI case built for the military in WW-2. I also believe these were the 40 mph tractors.

...looks like a young, healthier Humphrey Bogart at the wheel. Pretty grim facial expression. War is serioous business, isn't it?

CASEPOWER!!! You should be ashamed for not being able to tell the difference between the "L" series and "D" series. My 12 year old saw the error rite off. 20 lashes..

I just printed what the heading for what the picture said. Then I looked at it and new I screwed up. It's hard to see anything living in the seed corn bag. My mouse that ran the wheel that operated the generator ran off with the mouse that was stealing all my food. They waited till all the food was gone to go. Now I'm hungry and can't see a thing.

The armored tractor is definitely a DI. The Army requested Case to submit an armor option for testing at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. The Army also started development on its own version of an armored cab for the DI, which is slightly different than the one pictured. The Army then decided that they had no need for armor on these tractors and dropped the program, so if any one finds one it's a one off and very rare! The LAI pictured is the one developed for export to Great Britain under the Lend-Lease program. There were 200 of these tractors built. The later LAI's build for Army Ordnance would have air brakes. I've seen a few of these. The only reference I've ever seen for the 40 MPH LAI was on the old Case website, I've never found any information in the military records relating to a 40 MPH LAI. If anyone has any other information about it I'd appreciate knowing. The LAI's with air brakes that I've seen, the owners told me they don't do 40, so there must be other variations. There are actually quite a few military varitions of all the Case tractor models built during WW II.

The LAI has drum brakes about twice the size of the brakes on a 2 ton truck. stopping would have been no problem and with the leaf spring front it would even have a good ride.

After looking at the picture I believe it is a DI and from reading they didn't make a DI armored. Or did they?? Look at the covers on the oil pan. Thats no L series.

la's didn't use flange mounted mags either. they still retained the look of an la as well, unlike the snubbed off noses on the di and si

Thanks for the picture. I'd seen this armored DI before, but the background had been cropped out.

A picture of the LAI military with side curtains and blackout lights can be found in several of the CASE books- but I've never gotten around to scanning the picture in.
