I have checked the oil filter pipe and it is pressent. Experiencing loud valve train ticking noises and have 1-2 psi at idle on a mechanicla gauge ( 4-6 @ pto speed). There is no lower end noises at all. running 15w40 oil. Any suggestions on my next move? I am thinking about going after the oil pump pressure relief valve. Aftermarket oil pumps are hard to find. Any ideas where to purchase a pump at a resonable price? Thanks for any help with this in advance. Les

Mine just needed the pressure relief valve "freed up" and the spring replaced. After making none at all, the pressure gauge now reads 16psi and the engine sounds great.

Mike, so you droped the pan and accessed the pressure releif valve at the oil pump? Did you have to drop the pump too?

Thanks for you help,
Les

I assume you are talking about a 4 cylinder 148 cu.in. engine?
If so what is good/adaquate oil pressure in that engine?
Terry

A rule of thumb is 10psi per 1000 rpm. So at pto speed I would like to see 20 psi or better. At this point I have 7 psi at pto speed (very low).

Yes,

The pan and pump need to be pulled off to work on the relief valve. Depending on your axle type, you may need to remove it to get the pan off. Mine (a non-adjustable utility axle) had to be removed. None of this was difficult, and the relief valve was indeed my problem. Drop me an email if you need more info.

Oil pressure range is 14-20 psi @ 1750 rpm. Check the press with an independent 0-30 psi gauge @ the block. The oil pump pick up is a floating screen that could be partially plugged or stuck in the up position. I would idle the engine and slowly add a couple of qts of oil while observing the press gauge. Other than that you probably need to pull the pan & check the pump/relief and bearings. Good luck, Joe

L. Nelson; How many hours on that 300? The bottom end on my 350 was bad, and I had no oil pressure like yours. My lower end had no noise either. I never pulled the head, but I pulled the engine, put it on a stand, flipped it over and tackeled it. The crank needed to be turned. I believe rated oil pressure is only 18 to 22 PSI. Hope this helps John
