Two years ago I got a 57 600. When it was cold it would blow white smoke and not run smoothly and not have full power. I got the injectors cleaned and checked, new fuel filters, completely overhauled the engine with new sleaves and pistons. After the water temp comes up if you work it the smoke clears up and it runs like a top. thats the way it worked untill I was at a memorial day pull I had it warmed up no smoke then it stated blowing white smoke like it was cold and it would not clean up. So I had the bosch PSB pump gone over and I put it back on timed it at 28' BTDC and it worked just like before but now it alternates between running right and not running right. We had it on the dyno and it you can pull it down to PTO speed and a little over 80HP and it will hold it for a little and then it will lose power and blow black smoke like crazy and drop to about 55 or 60 HP. We checked temps on injectors and exauhst man. and all seemed to be uniform there is no clear miss and the fuel filters are fine. Anyone who can shed some light with a simmilar experience is more than welcome. Joel

I know nothing about diesel engines, but when I was researching diesel smoke, your question came up and a diesel trivia page came up and I thought I would share the site with you. It is www.dieselpage.com/trivial.htm phone# 800-658-9355. One question was White smoke is most commonly an indication of what? answer Timing problem. You might have already checked that but like I said I do not know nothing about engines. Take care Mike from Texas

Am curious, are you running with anti-freeze in it or straight water? Have you checked your oil for signs of anti-freeze in the oil. Loosen the bottom of the plug after the tractor has set a couple of days and check for antifreeze or water. Another thing is after the tractor is at running temperture check to see if you have any bubbles in the radiator. Good luck with it and keep us informed.

I would pressure test the cooling system, looks like you have a coolant leak, white smoke is good indication it's coolant leak somewhere in the system. Not sure if you have pre-cups around your injectors, but that would be one place to look at. I think the reason you see it clear up once it warms up is that the crack or leak you have in the cooling system seal up with the heat, once it cools down it starts all over until it get worse. good luck.

Just a little confused reading your post, Milky...does the tractor alternate black and white smoke or is it only blowing black smoke when down on power? I agree with the rest of the guys IF the engine is up to temp and you're getting white smoke. If you have black smoke and down on power, and you are sure the injectors are good, I'd go back and check valve lash and have another look at the injector pump. Just for fun, make sure the air cleaner and manifold is OK. Sounds like the timing is retarded when it's acting up. Let us know what you find, these things are good to know.

Make sure powercells are in good shape and try 31degree timing

The heads were all checked when the motor was overhauled. It acted this way both before and after overhaul. It seemes to be something in the fuel system because it wont run right then like you flipped a switch it will run like a top. thanks, Joel

were the heads re-surfaced when they were overhauled or just new guides and seats?

just wondering

Our neighbor's 1070 blew white smoke. All three heads were shot. No visible cracks on the surface. But after we removed the valves , you could see them in the port areas.

I agree with Mike, White smoke in an auto usually points right to anti freeze, my car had the same symptoms, got on the pedal and it had enough rpms to burn off the excess anti freeze, when it idled it blew out white smoke and ran very bad. I would have to say head gasket or a crack somewhere. Good Luck

hmm... sounds like a head gasket maybe? pressure test your cooling system. if the pressure drops, you may have found your answer.

good luck!
