I'm looking to purchase a Case garden tractor, probably a 444 or one of its successors. Are there any particular areas or parts I should pay attention to when inspecting one?

Check the bottom of the transmission for cracks (welds) check the right hand frame rail by the brake drum for cracks or welds. take he belt off the PTO clutch and check for pully wobble ( no up and down movement and .010"-.020" between clutch friction surface and disc). Disc should be at least 1/8" thick . These are just a few things I'll no doubt think of more. hope this helps.
