I've been surfing the web (mostly here and related links) for VAC info. Finding lots of old websites that no longer exist. I found a VAC for sale that looks pretty good. Serial number is VAC5267697 which I take to be a '48. The info I've been able to find says the Eagle hitch came out in '49, but one site says it was optional in '48. True? Or is this an owner-update?

Nowhere can I find the hp rating on this beast. I need to look at it again to see if it has a belt pulley...I can't remember. I does have a pto and the 3ph. Also appears to come with a 4' bushhog type mower (Howse). No price on the sign and no answer yet on the phone number. Tin is straight and orange. Rear tires are like new. Front are so-so. I see an alternator sticking out the side so I assume it's been converted to 12V. Assuming it runs and doesn't smoke, what's a good value? $1500? Or less?

What else do you need to know about it to give me good answers?

Thanks.

Jim,
Thanks for the photo. This is a eagle hitch case sold for thier prior 49 va series tractors. I'm guessing this came out after 49. The manuel I have for one of these is dated June 49. It hade the ball ends instead of the eagle hitch latches but the title page still calls it an eagle hitch. Two different top link lengths were used with the kit. One for use with case built 3 pt equip and another longer one for use with ferggie type equip. You simply replace the right threaded end of the top link with the longer one in the kit. I've heard them refered to as the "stockton" hitch. Anybody know why? Be interesting to know. There were mounted plows available before 49 but they were vcmb plows that were not 3 pt. Hope this helps. The hitch on your photo looks like the factory one, not a home made one.

talking about this one? (click on the link below)

its got a power lift. not an eagle hitch. the reason you couldnmt find a pulley is because its not there. the stub is though, thats the pump.

Case considered the Kingston pump a high pressure unit compared to its own system driven off the camshaft on later units which was called a low pressure system. it utilizes a remote cylinder mounted under the belly of the tractor and a remote valve body to control operation of the cylinder mounted beside the steering column.

havent really heard much in the way of eagle hitch vs. powerlift but im sure anyone can tell you the benefits of a 3 pt. hitch in any form is a very versatile tool on any tractor.

good luck!

You beat me to it! I put 4 pics in the gallery this morning with the intention of putting them in a post for further consideration, but I got too busy (all my help took the day off). Here are the other 3 pics:

He's asking $1200 for the package. I haven't heard it run yet. I took this pics last night with the sun kind of low in the west. Made it hard to get a good shot of the left side with the shadows.

shes a real looker thats for sure!

if you do snap it up, you may want to consider replacing the air snorkel w/ the proper oil bath air cleaner.

go for it. they're nice little projects for a first time restoration too.

good luck!

Like Mike says, that is a good price. Not sure about your Eagle hitch question. Maybe Wheat Straw will check in. He seems to know more about VACs than anybody.
I have a '52 VAC. It's kind of tired but still works and I like it. Good rugged little tractor.

$1500 seems reasonable w/ a mower attached.

the majority of VAC parts are still readily available @ the dealer, so investing in it is a good bet for a work unit.

the eagle hitch wasn't available until 1949 but Case had a "power lift" available that ran off a pump on the belt pulley shaft on models prior to 1949.

hope this helps!

In Nebraska Tractor Test #431 (Oct. '49) a VAC with the standard gas engine (LowCostFuel engine was also available) developed 19.04 brake horsepower and 15 drawbar horsepower. Since you are in Utah the VAC you're looking at could have the high altitude pistons which will produce more power than the standard engine under the same conditions. The link will take you to some photos of different hitches on VAC tractors (look in 'Stuff" album also). The add -on 3-point is easy to spot as it has links from the center hitch that go back to the rear axle-mounted lift arms on each side of the tractor; you had to step over these links to get on and off. Unfortunately I do not have a picture of that setup. As for price it would be worth about a grand, more or less, here in western Colo. If it's really primo then 1500 would not be too much with the mower.
