441L came with our farm. Believe it is about a 1964 model. Was in working order until yesterday. Currently runs, but overheating. Replaced the thermostat and flushed radiator. Thermostat now opening at 180 but engine quickly continuing to heat to 230 (w/ shutting down immediately). Brakes have some problems - work minimally. Doubt it's ever been refurbished.

Questions:
1) Is this model desirable - what would be the range in value?
2) Worth fixing? We'd probably have to have someone else do the work - my husband has reached the limits of his mechanical knowledge Not sure if it's time to trade it in.
3) Any ideas what to look for re: other causes of overheating?

Did she say that her husband has reached the limits of his mechnical knowledge and it's time to trade him in? The old tractors are a lot easier to work on than the new ones and in most cases, less expensive to repair. Does the radiator get hot? Does it boil? I think it should only have a 4lb. pressure cap on it. The brakes are not that hard to fix. Is there a local place where he can get them relined after he removes them?

If your husband can do some work I'm sure some of the folks here can give hime some suggestions. May or may not be something serious. Trading can cost $$$ also and they may not offer much for your tractor. Wait for some opinions.

Oh, and be glad it anin't newer and green!! My brother still farms for a couple of years yet. Had a similar problem with his JD 4050 110 hp tractor. Blowing antifreeze, dealer says just a bad theromostat, had it changed and same thing. Dealer took it back and started to tear into it. Said head was cracked, sent it to a place that fixes heads for them, he couldn't fix it so it had to go to Minneapolis for repair. Dealer said better look at rings, etc., while its down. Brought it back eventually along with a $6500 bill. Glad the older ones don't cost like that!

Had someone come look at the tractor. Said the problem is in the temp guage. Water not boiling, but then it is 50/50 antifreeze, so wouldn't expect it to. Water does circulate. Thermostat opens at 180. My husband was a bit skeptical that it was the guage since he replaced it last year, so I asked the guy whether he used a thermometer to test. He said he put his finger in! (after checking to see that the radiator cap & engine block weren't hot, despite guage sitting at 230)

Since he's still got his finger, looks like I won't be trading in the tractor (or the husband) for a bit. Guess I'll get it fixed (tractor, not husband!)
