I recently bought an '88 580 K. It is working pretty well for us, aside from various leaks. I have the service manual, so I expect to gradually bring it up to better condition. The problem that still has me baffled is the swing sequence valve. When swinging the bucket from far left to far right (and the other way), it acts like it's working real hard at a couple of points. First, when going to either extreme, it goes real slow sooner than I think it should for any kind of cushion. Also, at about 45 degrees, it slows down and then kind of jumps and moves more quickly. I figure this must have something to do with the swing seqence valve, but I only found a little information on it in the manual, and it does not seem to address my problem. Any help would be much appreciated. John

I guess you could have a criss-cross relief valve problem but (pardon the dumb question) have you greased it? Dennis.....

Hi Dennis. Thanks for the thought. Yes, I just greased it. That cleared up some of the squeaking from the boom joints, but it did not affect the swinging problem. What do you mean by a criss-cross reflief valve? I could believe that might be it. The stabilizer valves have been criss-crossed at some point, so someone must have been messing around down there. Thanks, John.

Hi, I'm not familar with your K but I think they all have a criss-cross relief system. On my 530 two hoses come from the control valve and connect to a block. Four hoses come out of the block (two hoses per swing cylinder). The block is the criss-cross relief. It controls the difference in flow of the swing cylinders. The piston area on the push side of a cylinder is greater than the pull side because the cylinder rod is taking up space. The cylinder that is pushing needs more oil than the one pulling. The criss-cross makes up the difference. Hope that makes sense....

I think I understand. On the 580K, there is a swing sequence valve. It's function seems to be to keep the boom from aproaching the extremes too fast. I think it also has something to do with changing when each piston is pushing or pulling through the swing. I think that is the root of my problem, so I'll have to check out the swing sequence valve. Thanks, John
