I have an older 580ck serno 8322963. Does anyone know what year it was made? I am planning on restoring it and have resently ordered the manuals. I have one serious symptom that I need some help understanding. Recently (new problem) I noted a great deal of oil in the radiator. As a auto machanic the hair on the back of my neck stands up. There has been no overheating,it still runs great, and I haven't noticed loss of engine oil. I know little of this machine and hope that you have a clue as to what it might be. Someone suggested that it may have something to do with an oil cooler. The next problem i am going to tackle is forward and reverse. When I first start the tractor it won't move. After a few minutes it will go in reverse, after that forward. It can barely move itself. The engine is quite strong, Recntly overhauled by the privious owner. Any Suggestions? Two other symtoms that may or may not be related. 1) no breaks. 2) no cltch, this nay be as simple as getting the missing linkage component to the plddle. (this would imply replacinng the stick that i have wedged in to hold the valve in a functioning position.) Please Help.
Thanks, George

hey George, oil in the radiator, sounds like your oil cooler is leaking in the radiator. trouble with foward and reverse sounds like the rockford clutch pack seals are leaking. the torque tube that holds the clutch assembly where the seals sit is worn allowing the ring seals to open and allow blowby of the needed pressure to operate the clutch packs.140 to 200 psi on your clutch gauge. the pickup tube that feeds the pump that is the heart of the drive is blocked. thats just what it does after 20 years or so. the pickup and pump are located under and foward of the steering column. you really need to split the machine to service it. Its a job and a half and you NEED the manuals, both PARTS and SERVICE. the torque converter is also worn but can be rebuilt by any good machine shop, it needs to hold 40 psi of pressure. mine cost $300 to sleave and rebuild diameters but is like new now. all said I invested $1800 and about two months working weekends in rebuilding the drive. all the parts are still available from Case.I was dealing with Briggs Construction Equipment at www.briggsequipment.com. Now let me tell you the good part, for all this effort and money I now have a machine like new. When I start it up there is zero wait for foward or reverse.Full power at 200 psi and the machine will move mountains all day long. The oil never gets water in it anymore. The gasket between the engine and torque converter was missing and allowed rain water to seep in but no oil to seep out, go figure, after a good rain I could drain two quarts of water buy cracking the drain plugs. All this crap about having to wait for these machines to warm up so they can move is just because everythings worn and plugged up from age and neglect. My machine was the same way once. the last thing I must tell anyone is that DO NOT USE SEALANTS! Case makes gaskets for every seal point, starter included. They will find there way to the screen on the pickup tube and choke it off. My service books end every chapter with the following, 99% of all hydraulic problems are caused by contaminated oil. this is so true. john

I have a 580CK and when these things set they collect water from condensation in the shuttleshift. This played _ell with mine until I pulled the two drain plugs from the shuttleshift, and while the plugs were still out, started the engine for just a couple of seconds three times to pump the contaminated fuild from the torque converter. Before filling the shuttleshift with fuild, relace the filter which is is front of the raditor. The shuttleshift takes 16 quarts of Case TCH fuild. After some fuild has been added you will need to start the tractor to get the fuild in the torque converter. Check the fuild levels after the tractor has set a while and any traped air has had time to work it way out of the system.

Good Luck as this worked for me.

Thanks. There is a what I believe to be a pump mounted in front and at the bottom of the radiator. Is this related. Sorry, I am a little starved for information. I ordered manuals yesterday.

REF: When I first start the tractor it won't move. After a few minutes it will go in reverse, after that forward. It can barely move itself.

#Check the torque converter. Mine took 11 quarts of type A transmission fluid. I didn't even know I had a torque converter until this problem occurred. If your is like mine the fill plug is on the right side of the tractor, next to were the motor meets the clutch assembly. It sit's up high and looks like a inch and a quarter bolt head. Best of Luck.
