I am restoring my grandfather’s 1953 DC Case and have removed the fenders, gas tank, floorboards, but nothing major. The engine is going to need rebuilding and I am wondering if I should sand blast the tractor now or rebuild the engine. Just wanting to get some advice from folks that have already been down that path. Thanks in advance.

James Williams

Hey James; The 1'st tractor I restored, a 53 SC, was completely restored, then sandblasted. Trouble was that sand got into the engine, bell housing and 1 rear axle. No more sandblasting here. Just my thoughts.

do the dirty work first. rebuild the engine, assemble the rolling chassis but remove all the tinwork (like you have done partially) including the grille, hood etc. (maybe the rad too). it makes more sense to do that first rather than working harder at protecting the paint job when focusing on repairs.

thats what father and i did w/ my VAC. we stripped it down, repaired everything we could first, then we gave the painter all the pieces and a rolling chassis to sandblast, and a gallon of Power Red. he did it all for $100CDN ($65-$70US). bargain eh?

good luck!
