The Nebraska tests show the 1030 with 101 hp with 451 cu in. at 2000 RPM and weighs 9335 lbs. The 1070 with 107 hp with 451 cu in. at 2100 rpm and weighs 11,410. Both without cabs. Is that correct? I want to build either a 1030 or 1070 to pull. I have never been able to weigh them but I never thought their was that much difference. Is the engine design the same since they both have 451 cu in or is the 1070 better designed? Also the 1370 has the 504 cu in is that the same block with a bigger diameter piston.
Other words can you take a 1070 to 504 cu in.? Any and all input would be appreciated! Thanks

Jon,
I have both a 1030 and a 1070. The 1030 never had Case-o-matic. Forget the 1030 for any serious pulling. The power cell diesel injection system just doesn't have much power potential. The direct injection on the 1070 has great potential. The 1175 does NOT have a 504. It's rated at 121 horsepower with a 451 motor. Yes, a 504 motor will bolt up to the 1070 and the transmission will hold up. Rather than attempting to increase the cubic inches of the 451 motor, get a good turbo 504 from a salvage yard.

Find a 1175 if want outboard planitary drives, some of these had them a few was a stardard drive. They run a 504 engine. The 504 had direct injection and has stronger componetss then the 451 in a 1030. A 504 has 1 more head bolt per head and higher touqre specs for the bolts. Lots more power can be made form these engines due to the cubes you strat with. Here in wis there was a Real good Atpa tracotr that had newer sheet metal on it case ih stuff. But underneither was nothing more then a stripped down 1070 rear end with a 504 bored out and worked to oh my god extremes. Very good tractor. One of the top pullers in the nation is from near me and now they run a non smoker class tractor. At one time there tractor ran a 806 block under new sheet metal tell they switched to componet tractor.

J.B. Holland in Centralia, Kansas bolted a 504 to his 970 8 speed and put it in pulls back in the eighties.

The 70 series engine is definately the better choice for HP for pulling. There are some 1070 8 speeds (no power shift) which would make the best puller. The 504 block is not a direct boltup and the 1370 gets too heavy to make a good puller. The planetary rear end would be a plus. Lowe's out of Greensburg Indiana campaigned a 1070 SS for years, maybe still does. Andy Main and the Indianapolis branch guys had a 1370 that was top of the line in the 70's right up there with Hart and Perrys G1000 till the hyper-max IH's got hot.

We had a 1370 that would do an honest 350 hp at 3500 rpm with radical pump and alcohol injection and one turbo (if you could keep head gaskets intact) for short bursts. Used it in the field in the spring so we never did any radical weight reduction.

Hey John! A 1070 had direct injection and a 1030 had indirect injection. And no a 1030 was never offered with a case-o-matic. About the 451-504, I don't know.
