I put a GM alternator on my VAC.
I had to change the switch when I did.
It would never start (have had sense 1959) with a 6 volt battery. I do not remember anything about CCR back then so the batteries may have not been as good, but were new.

Hey David; I believe it is positive ground. 6V is very satisfactory if: 1. You have a good battery, 600CCA @ 0 or better. 2. The tractor is equipped with size 2/0 battery cable with good clean connections.
