I ASKED THIS QUESTION ABOUT A WEEK AGO, RECEIVED A REPLY. BUT NOW I AM PUZZELED. I WANTED TO KNOW IF THE VAO WAS 6 OR 12 VOLT. WAS TOLD 6V POSITIVE GROUND. WHEN I GOT THE TRACTOR THEIR WAS AN 8 VOLT BATTERY IN IT, IS THAT OK? ALSO IF WHEN YOU CHARGE IT DO I USE THE 6V CYCLE ON CHARGER OR 12V FOR A SHORTER TIME? WHAT ABOUT IF IT NEEDS TO BE BOOSTED IS USING A 12V NEG GROUND SYSTEM OK, AND CONNECT POS TO POS, NEG TO NEG AND MAKE SURE THAT THE VEHILES DON'T TOUCH? THANKS IN ADVANCE.

VAs were 6V some were positive ground, some were negative ground, it all depended on which one of the two plants it was built in.

the 8V battery is ok, all of the electrical is built to handle it. the starter will handle 12V.

boosting @ the battery isnt recommended but you can bypass the battery and jump the starter directly. ground the positive to the block (seeing your tractor is positive ground) and put the negative lead to the starter. itll turn over real quick and hopefully start if theres enuff juice in the battery to power the coil.

charging on 6V is adequate because thats all the tractor reqires. once it starts, just let it run a while to charge up completely.

hope this helps!

Rock Island, Iowa was one and i think Racine, Wisconsin was the other but i may be wrong on the latter one.

Rock Island is in Iowa not Illinois. i made that mistake before too. in my book, it makes a reference to a plant in Burlington, Iowa. during the labour dispute in December of 1946, the only two Case factories in operation were Rock Island and Burlington. the only tractor manufactured for 15 months was the VAC. after the dispute was resolved, all plants went back to full operation producing Case's full line of tractors. maybe Burlington was the other plant.

i dunno

Jim, 6-volt can be used with 8-volt battery to supply better kick for cold weather starting. My SC which is old is 6, but neg ground, I was suprised it wasn't positive. How is the ground hooked up now? I don't reccomend jumping with 12 volt, though I've seen some do this. Best to buy a charger capable of six volt charging. Don't charge 6 with 12 rating, battery may boil and blow-up or spit acid or such. TSC has new battery's for cheap, including 8-volts if you have stores by you. If it's been setting for awhile, I'm sure you'll need a new one. Clean all the terms and cables and charge first. I'm sure a 6-volt charger should get it to work if it's good.
