I was given a 1948 VAC Case. What manuals do I need to get started and where might I pick them up. It was last used about 2 years ago. But one big question to get me started -- how do I check the oil? Sorry but I am a city boy, just starting to restore this tractor.

It may not apply, but I have a 1950 model D. The oil level on the D is checked at a plug on the side of the oil pan. There are actually two plugs, a hi and a low level. (1/2 in pipe threaded plug)

There should be a dipstick just to the left and below the carburetor on the side of the engine block. I can almost see it in the photo.

Good News Bad News, Oil and battery changed! Turns over but does not start. It's like it is not "firing". I ordered a manual --- til then any suggestions?

Do you have voltage coming to the distributor and coil when the switch is on? If so, you might try replacing the points and condenser. NAPA auto parts should have them. You may need to bring the old ones in so they can match them up. If the tractor has been sitting for a long time the coil could have gone dead. NAPA should have the coil as well.

Yes, you were correct. I was looking for something along the lines of a dipstick handle. This one looks more like a "knob".

It should have a handle on it, perhaps it is broken off. Your local auto parts store should be able to order the oil filter. There is a metal stem that slides up into the filter. Make sure it is attached to the housing that the filter screws in to.

Using 15w40 is OK. I use the 30W heavy duty in all my antique tractors year round. It should run with around 15 psi of oil pressure, if the engine is not worn out.
