Hey John
Pulled my Case 930 1967 out of the shop after 2 years of restoring, bled the fuel lines and after 5 seconds it started right up. My question is, I was watching the oil flow at the rocker arms and it appeared to be weak or slow at best. Water temp was 170 to 180 degress. I only have an idiot light on this tractor on which I do not trust. I did not have an oil pressure gauge at the oil filter but did have the wife turn it over while I have the plug out by the oil filter and tried to hold a fitting over the hole with a gauge, had a ton of oil shoot out and even with my finger over the hole it seemed like lots of pressure, Could the oil filter assembly be blocked, Good oil up to it but maybe none thru it. Monday the 15th I am picking up a screw in oil pressure gauge to see what pressure is at idling, About 20 to 30 p.s.i.??? My mechanic friend asked me if I was sure I put the cam bushing in correct and I was 99.99 % positive, Could you give me any insight on what to check and what may be wrong, I do not want to run it to long. Bottom end sounded great but had to put a few drops of oil on the rocker arm shaft every five minutes to quiet it down. My work number is 1-800-833-7492 ext 45601, I will be there tomorrow from 5 am to noon, normal work days are 5 am to 1:30 MN time. Will appreciate any help you can offer, Thanks
Mike from S.E. MN

Mike, had an 1150 dozer (same engine) in for overhaul last spring with no oil to rockers , someone had cut holes in the valve cover to run oil lines to the rockers , we thought it must have cam bearing problem, but with block empty couldn't find anything wrong. Turned out to be the rocker shafts turned around end for end , book shows the proper assembly .

Hey MGM: I've got to beg off this till I check a service manual. If the tiny "O" rings at the bottom of the oil supply tubes to the rockers wewre missing you'd see oil flowing out around them, but that wasn't mentioned. I can't remember on the 930 if the shaft is to be assembled in a certain way to achieve flow or not. Hopefully someone will help us here. Maybe we will both learn something. Klyde!! you around??

Head gasket oil holes comes to mind first. There are 3 cam bearings that you hafta check (1 for each head) I have had the rocker shafts plugged with sludge and if I remember right they have corks in the end that could be leaking, the cotterpins hold them in. DONT cut grooves in the TOP of the rocker shaft, oil is needed on the bottom where the pressure is against the shaft. holes in the shaft can be on either side but push rod side is prefered. And you are right about idiot light, some go off with as little as 2psi. put a gauge on it, to check. And lastly they don't have a lot of oil comming up there but you should see it dripping off of every rocker.

Hey Klyde
Nice to hear from you again.I do see very small drippage off the shaft but no oil coming up thru the rocker arm and getting to the push rod, this is my area of main concern. Going to check my oil pressure tonight, Can I check it where the idiot sensor is??

Thanks again Klyde

Yes . Check where the sending unit is. I usually turn up that relief a little anyway. they were always a little light on oil pressure as I remember. I think thats why they used a light instead of a gauge.

John
Talked with a Case dealer mechanic this morn, he mentioned the old case has a poor design at best where oil flows from the rocker arm shaft to the top of the rocker arm. Suggested I cut a tiny groove in the shaft to direct oil flow to top so rocker arm will get oil. Says they have done this before, My oil seals were in and I have heard you wont see lots of oil flow up there anyway. Anyone know where I can get a used 930 head, I think I have one that is cracked. Thanks again
Mike

John,
If I remember correctly you are the person who recommends 12 volt generators as opposed to switching to alternators. Do you know of a good place to obtain generators and what has to be done to the charging system besides changing light bulbs? Thanks-I want to keep my DC's as close to stock as possible. Don
