I recently bought a 1941 Case SC. When the engine runs it knocks badly, the sound reminds me of a John Deere 2 cylinder diesel. As soon as the engine is under a load, the knock goes away. I can't really tell where it is coming from but it sounds like the upper engine more than the lower end. What could be cuasing this knock? Worn wrist pins maybe? Connecting rod bearings? Thanks for your help.

Josh, Walt on the ATIS list had posted this piece of information that might help.
Per Walt:
"To check the knocking noise you can run the engine at idle and listen to the noise then remove a spark plug wire near it. If the sound goes away then it is a rod if it gets worse then it is a wrist pin. Check several plugs to determan the correct cylinder.
Rods knock under load wrist pins knock under no load."
I have not tried this but it might help.

It could be either rod bearings or wrist pins or both. Might want to drop the oil pan and get you a small pry bar and see how much you can shake the rods and crankshaft. You will probably have to remove the head and take some pistons out to be able to tell much about the wrist pins. You might be able to watch them from underneath by rotating the engine back and forth.
