15.5 tires on a 12'' rim....?

For years we've had 13.6" tires on the back of our DC's. However I want to pull a two 16" mounted plow and am going to need all the traction I can get. Would it work out well to put on 15.5's? 14.9's are a little narrower but are higher profile and low gear is already high enough. Ideally I suppose I should put on 14" rims but am not made out of money! Looks is very important too. This one is my baby!

I'm new to tractors and tire sizes. I was talking to Miller's and got some rims for my MM. Had to ask what size rim for each tire I asked on. Why isn't there a chart on YT site, in a tech section? or a list in the Miller catalog on reccommended sizes, second choices and explanation of tread types and for what use, etc. ?? Would be helpful to us wanna-be's for sure. Biggest problem I've found is finding SMALL enough widths for old iron. Miller's is one of few that still has some sizes.

Did you say 2 16's mounted? We pulled 3 16's in the hills all the time with only 12 X 38's on it. Our SC's had 11" and we pulled 2 16's without any problems. If you were using the old Case 3 16's trailer type I would say extra tire but not 2 16's. Don't know if any of you guys ever got involved with that old 3 16 plow that Case sold but that thing was the hardest pulling plow we ever hooked onto.

Glenn,
I mounted 15.5 x 38's on my DC LP. It has 12 inch rims and they fit just fine. I have 16.9 x 38's on my DC puller w/14 inch rims and they fit well also. I would not put 15.5 on an 11 inch rim though.

Hey, my SC has 16.9x38s on it. Looks funny but the price was right!

that DC will pull thoes 2x16's with 13.6 rubber unless you are plowing in mud than the 15.5's wont help. low gear? he should pull that plow in 3rd tom

Interesting 3 16's behind a DC. We pull 2 14's with Dad's DC bought new in '51, first and sometimes second. 730 3 14's semi-mounted. 4 16's behind 1270. 4 18's behind 2670. Dad worked 135 acres for years with the DC.. Every year when fall work was done he said he could tell he took a little more out of his tractor. Roto caps on the valves were an absolute must! I' not at all sure I will be pulling the 2 16's. Already measured plow, possible 2 14 adjustment.

WOW!! You must be plowin concrete if that is all the plow you can pull. My 2470 will pull 6-20" Case without too much trouble. Our soil is gray clay and we plow about 12-14" deep.

Hey Glenn; Holy Cow!! What kind of ground you got there? I thought this clay we have was the worst ground in the country. 3-16's behind the DC, play with it in 2nd. 4-16's behind the 730CK in 3rd. 4-16's behind the 870, don't even know they are there. 4-18's behind the 1175. 8-16''s Kvernlands behind the 4690 and she played with them. Bought new 7-16's Salfords and she works. Salfords do a much better job; much heavier plow. The other plows are all CASE. Are you pulling those mean pullin Deere plows behind them CASE tractors??

John, In response to your question about our soil...we have a heavy blend. Quite a bit of red clay. But much of it is just a heavy black soil. It is very productive land that can withstand long periods without rain. You have to be careful not to work it too wet or too early in the spring. It grows excellent corn and alfalfa but you've got to treat it right. Very hard pulling and sometimes wet in the fall but I guess that's all I've ever known.

Hey Glenn; 15.5's will not work very well on 12" rims. They will be extremely distorted. However, I can tell you from experience that the DC will easily handle those 2-16's on the 13.6 rubber. I pulled 3-16's on 13.6 rubber. Never lacked for traction and that was in clay.

If looks are somewhat at stake , go with 14.9, with the tall side wall where the 15.5 sidewall is to short and stiff. What you need is more weight with the tires you have now, bigger tires will spread out the psi you have to the ground and you will have less traction. Lets say you were caught driving a JD, and you punishment was to have your foot run over by one of two rear tractor tires. One being a 11.2 and the other a 16.9 and you had your pick. From this you may two lessons, first to pick the wide tire and the second not to get caught driving a JD.

Thanks for the laugh, Don. You're a pretty funny guy. (but I still wouldn't give up your day job...)

So, if I had the choice of getting my foot run over by a Case 25-45 with steel wheels or by a Case 25-45 with steel wheels and steel WHEEL EXTENSIONS... which should I pick then? (grin)

I agree with Donl 11.4 max on an SC 13.6 on a DC everything else just screws up traction and gearing. Put 12.4's on my SC once and realy screwed up my best Bean pullin tractor.(but they were cheap) If you don't count the labor of changing them twice!!

I have 20.8's on my DC and I will hook to the back of any DC with the smaller tires and pull you all over the country backwards any day. That just gets low gear fast enough to pull something.

Do you have fluid in those 20.8's? What size rim do you have? 15.5's would sure hold more fluid than 13.6's = better traction. Will the 15.5's work on my 12' rim though? I know it's not kosher but will it work well?, wear correctly? I know with cars/trucks one can put on much wider than factory tires with no ill-effect. I will have to say though that 13.6's full of fluid will really make that DC hook up.
