My father owns a Case 600, model 611B, dual range drive, serial # 6098399. I need information to decide whether I should spend money and time on it. What are the pro's and con's in using this tractor? A long time ago when he bought it, the previous owner told him it had problems with shifting/torque converter. I don't want to buy manuals yet if I'm convinced this is not the right tractor for me.

Arnold-- I agree with Don R on the 611. I had one
and it also was hard to get in gear. No matter how you adjusted it, it always scraped going in gear. As a result, all the gears in the transmission were extremely worn. Also it liked to eat starters. After two replacements of broken starters I finally sold the tractor. I just like the feel of a real clutch and never could get use to the case-o-matic.

From your description, it sounds like the direct drive clutch system is not working properly. Generally, this is caused by a worn seal and bushing in the direct drive clutch pack, and is quite expensive to replace. However, if everything else is OK you can probably get by using the tractor without the direct drive system working.

my thoughts on a 600 is that the caseomatic drive on them was a problem. they were not as good as the later models & you have to have to like them. the motor in the 600 is a dry sleeve engine & didn't seem as good as the rest of the case line.
