We live in PA and have had a long stretch of freezing weather. Good to know the old 1070 will not be the thing to hold us back every morning when we go to spread manure - just a sniff of ether and she jumps to life every morning with no block heater. Yesterday it was 1 degree outside. Now if we could just get the manure to the field without freezing fast to that spreader. Manure is caked up about 5-6 inches in spots - builds a little more each day. Sure will be nice to see spring.

Glad to hear our old Cases are still serving their purpose well! However it would be far better to use the block heater rather than the either. We have used either from time to time and not directly (at least not immediately) had any problems but warming the block which will warm the oil some is a far better way to go. Easier on the starter, batteries, and engine itself. Just my opinion. By the way, we have a 1270 that will start without any help if need be down to about 10º, gotta love those Cases!

Hey Shultz: That ether is guaranteed to do any or all of 3 things: Blown head gasket, if you're lucky, cracked head, or cracked sleeve. The block heater is the cheapest way.

John: Dad and I have a 970 and 1070 that we use ether to start(only when didn't have time to plug the heater in), and we have never experienced any problems. Have these problems happened to you, or to someone you know?

The tractor has 5,000 hours on it, and the engine has never been touched - not even the valve covers. When we got it a few years ago it only had 1500 hours on it - it's one of the most used tractor on the place behind the 930 CK Case and 5250 CaseIH. It's always the best starting tactor in the winter and about the only thing that we start from november to March. It came with the ether button and no block heater, and it has always started perfectly - only problem is fuel jelling once in a while. It only takes just a sniff - not a half a can. The same can has been in there for 4 or 5 years I'm guessing. Case equiped it with the thing - so we use it. I know that preheating would be better on engine life in the long run - hoping that this sub freezing stuff lets up soon. It will start up down to around 25 without the ether. Never had another diesel start that easy in the winter - not even close. Old 930 gets lazy on the start around 45 :)

My 1070 is equipped with the ether can ahead of the radiator. I disconnected and plugged mine. The ether would leak out in no time at all. I just squirt a little into the air intake.
