This is my first visit to this forum so pardon me if my questions are redundant or improper. I looked at a Case Model 222 hydrostatic-drive garden tractor today that I am interested in possibly purchasing. The current owner states that it was built in 1979. It has a Kohler 12hp single cylinder engine which seems to run fine, a mower deck (which I forgot to ask how wide, but probably between 38" to 48" inches), a single stage snowblower attachment with the impeller blades in real nice (that is, not all beaten up) condition and free spinning impeller shaft, and, a blower-vac assembly (which hangs off brackets at the rear of the chassis) with it's own engine and blower housing but no cart or hoses to complete the vacuum system. The seller is asking $1,300 for the whole rig and it seems to me that it is perhaps worth the money. About the only things I had serious concerns about were that the front axle/steering assembly has some play in it (apparently from a lot of turning sharply) and when stepping on the brake pedal, a lever with 'teeth' on it or whatever they are called catches on the chassis as if applying the parking brake. The rest of the machine is in pretty good condition and I saw no other signs of abuse.

So, what are these things worth, how are they as far as quality and longevity and are there any special concerns with a unit like this? I never noticed a rubber mounted engine on a garden tractor until I saw this unit today. I like that idea and the engine mounts were not all trashed so it is smoother operating that other garden tractors I've owned. I like the solid front axle and a lot of other heavy duty design features. I've never owned a Case or really looked at one before; I think I could like this unit as a decent piece of equipment. I would appreciate any feedback from people that are more knowledgable about Case garden tractors.

I have the same tractor. thats a great price for all that stuff. The front is simple to rebuild you can get the parts for it almost anywhere.

Thanks for both replies regarding the steering ball joints (and the replacement cost of them) and the hydraulic pump. I am still contemplating purchasing the 222 and appreciate this type of information.

I have a 220/210 and a 195. Big Case fan myself. One thing I would check is to drive it up an incline. The reason being is that you'll have a tractor that drives OK on level ground but won't climb a hill due to a weak hydraulic motor/pump. Just thought I mention this because you usally find this out too late if it does have a problem...

Bill,
I have a Case 220 which is basically the same as a 222 but 10 hp. It's a 1976 model. It has been a great tractor and would recommend one to anyone. As far as the steering, mine got loose several years back and I replaced the ball joints in the steering lickage and it solved the problem. I think there is three I replaced and the only place I could find them was at the dealer. They were expensive, about $40 each
I also have a 1987 222 with a 44" deck. Also a great machine.

Thanks for the reply, Bud. I am still considering buying the 222 as it does appear to be a nice unit with extra accessories. I only drove it around a gravel driveway for several minutes until the engine quit. I looked in the gas tank and saw some gas sloshing around and the owner alluded to there probably not being enough to keep it running at that point. I am concerned that perhaps the engine might have something wrong with it in that it shuts off after running only a few minutes. I will have to go back and check the machine out further.
