I'm looking at a 1490. I test drove it and the engine seemed very weak. It was about 5 degrees the morning I looked at it, about 20 degrees at the time I drove it. It had been running for 15 min. Do you think the powershift was that cold that it was dragging down the engine? It ran great otherwise, no blue smoke, no missing. Also, I would like to know how any owners of these like them.

Don't know much about them but if they have an oil bath breather it could have some water in it that froze (at those temps) , thus restricting the air flow. Just a guess.

I've had a 1390 for 20 years. Good little tractor. It should have a snappy motor, unless the timing retard on the bottom of the injection pump wasn't set back to normal position after being started.

A 1490 is pretty much a 1410 in newer sheetmetal. I've had several 1410's and several '90 series, good tractors. I've also worked on a few 1490's. If it seems weak, I'd sure want to pull the breather pipe and see if it has a lot of blowby (been there). I prefer the 10 series to the 90 series (sheet metal is better and the shifters are less trouble.) Engine is a real work horse and very easy on fuel. As with any David Brown expect 2 negatives: 1. Every seal will leak/weep; 2. The Lucas electronics were developed by the man who 'invented darkness' :-).
