There is a Case steam engine that is going to be sold on saturday at an auction that is about a mile away. I am guessing that it is about a 40 horse engine. The boiler is in need of repair and I wouldn't want to operate it the way it is now. I know it's hard to estimate a price on this but I am wondering if any of you have an idea of what it could go for? The gearing on it appears in real good shape there are a few spots that are rusted through on the smokebox. A few of the flues have been plugged. The people that own in want to get 6500 out of it but I don't think it would be worth that much. I'm not sure though. I would love to own a steam engine someday, but I'm not sure now is the time. I know they cost a lot to rebuild but there is just something about steam engines. I guess it's in my blood. I would like to get a Case, Russell or a Baker. In my opinion Case made the nicest looking steam engine of all. Thanks for any input.

My father-in-law bought a 20/60 minni. for $15g's in Ohio. Found out that ounce we got it to Indiana they said we couldn't run it. Fire box was to thin. $20,000 dollars more and three years later he sould get it back. Total $35,000 dollars and a good SC###ing without even a thank you. Be carefull who you buy things from and check you local state laws before you buy a steamer.

i was just looking at buying one as well, they do seem rather pricey for some reason, prob the antique problem... :) Might be better to build one. -Greg

6500.00 way to much to pay for a steam engine!
Where did you say this auction was located?

Normally I would not have anything to say BUT when someone just paid $25,000 for the machine and are trying to resell it for $40,000 makes you wonder why they bought it in the first place and IF I had known about the sale I would not have hesitated to pay $28,000 also go to www.lesterauction.com look for Kokamo Indiana sale
as far as pricing of boilers sold at auction I keep record of that info, the last 40hp Case sold in PA for $18,500, you need to look at what the resale value of the machine is verses any repairs needed in order to put a correct value on it. in other words if not too many repairs are necessary other than a boiler problem you can have someone from a certified boiler repair firm give you an estimate on the cost of repairs and then you can make a determination as to how much sweat equity you want to but into the machine. also there are several reasons not to get involved with a boiler project Licensing, transportation costs, anual fees associated with licenses and the higher costs of repairs and parts. they are as safe to operate as a vechicle as long as the operator is experienced and acts as the first "safety valve"
