2390- swapped axle housings, and they dont fit

I am putting the rear end together on a 2390. I was told by a case mechanic to keep the brake gears on the correct side, but to swap the axle housing to let the pinion and sun gears wear on their backsides. The RT side went in perfect. The LT will go together till about 70 thousandths gap between the housing and rearend. I have taken it apart twice now. The brakes are lined up, when put together the axle turns freely(gears are not bound or bottomed), there is nothing I can think of except the diameters are off or the depth of the mating flanges are off between the LT side rearend & the RT side axle housing.

Any ideas? Make a 70 thousandths shim for the flanges? The gears really need to run backwards because of wear. Switch gears in the housings?

Now I am going to pay closer attention to the loctite squeeze pattern on disassembly & try plastic guaging to see if the mating surfaces are the problem. I am getting tired of getting good at these steps!!!

Thanks,
Tremayne

What you need to switch is the sun gears, not the axle housings. The sun gear is where the most strain is and the wear is on one side of the teeth, so switching them from side to side means that you will now be using what was the back side of the teeth. The planet gears wear on both sides of the teeth so it does not help to switch (reverse) them.

when i put mine together there was a gap but as i remember it doesn;t seal on the outside flange it seals on the inside like you say check the sealent. the grape jelly anarobic sealer seems the best.
