I am in need of a vac power take off seal....
Question: Do you have to take the back cover off of the pto (shaft area) to replace the seal or can it be replaced from the outside w/o removing the plate?

Yes you do. There are three 3/8 bolts that to you have to take out. There may be a square plate which your pto sheild attaches to that the three bolts go through. Don't know what you call it but the seal is inserted from the inside. There are replacement seals for that. They are chicago rawhide. Don't know the number but can get if needed. Biggest problem you will have is replacing the seal and it still leaks. Because the old seals were leather and were drying out all of the time they caused lots of damage to the shafts they were protecting. The older seals were thick approx. 1/2" thick and replacement seals are half as thick and the new seal always hits where there was lots of damage. So what I always do now after learning the hard way is put the first seal in correctly then purchase another seal and put it in reversed and that way it misses where the old seal did the damage. The two new seals are exactly the same thickness as the old one was. It's amazing the difference with the two seals verses using only one. And for three or four dollars it sure helps with the leaks on the concrete floors.

What is the number on that seal? I have a case dealer looking for it and he can't find it! Also, on the CR Speedi Sleeves do you know the thickness of the sleeve for the shaft?

Appreciate all the help...The tractor is not near me at this time to measure.

I can use that CR number, too.

Along the same line, has anyone used a Chicago Rawhide Speedi-Sleeve to save a worn shaft? Does it work???

Thank you both for the information. I didn't think about the wear on the shaft; therefore, I would have replaced the seal and found out the hard way!

Good response...
