I just bought a 1977 1370 at an auction where I didn't get an extensive test drive. All excuses aside it doesn't seem to have any issues with the transmission or powershift but the engine is acting strange. When I went to take it down the road I slowly worked it up to wot and when I finally pushed it all the way she started smoking alot more than any diesel I've ever seen and acted like she was missing and not gaining rpm's easily. Is something wrecked or is there an easy fix...please?

Wow, I can't thank you all enough for your response's. I'm going to start with the simplest i.e. cheapest things first like filters and some fuel conditioner or ATF and while I've got the air filter out I'll check the turbo like Brent suggested. It sure would be nice to find this is something easy! Speaking of turbo's, is it pretty safe to by one from the boneyard or would I be better off getting a rebuilt? Any ideas on what they cost? One last thing, could a bad turbo be causing my missing or is a symptom of a bad fuel/air mixture i.e. not enough air?

A dragging turbo will cut down on the air, and smoke like a fiend. But it won't cause missing. A used one might be just as bad as the one you want to replace. Go with a rebuild.

Sam, Do the usual tune up things like air filters, fuel filters. Then put some fuel conditioner or ATF in the fuel. It could be injectors sticking. I had one on mine that caused a high speed miss & burble. Couldn't figure what it was until it quit completely. Replaced it and it's smooth at all speeds.

Sam Check Both Air Filters. Remove Hose Between Air Filter Housing & Turbo Charger. With Motor OFF With Fingers Move Turbo Charger Shaft From 7:00 To 2:00 O clock Position & If Shaft Moves .005 TH. Or More Replace Turbo. Look If Turbo Wheel Is Contacting Turbo Housing, Which Under High R.P.MS.& Load Will Stop Wheel From Rotating. Brent P.S. Could Be Bad Injecters Or Week Valve Springs

Sam, I overhauled a 2090 and it would run great up to 1100 RPM , then it would miss and loose power. After much checking to see what I had done wrong, we found that the screen in the fuel tank on the
suction pipe that is supposed to stick out straight
had folded down and was restricting the fuel flow.
Removed screen,tractor ran great .

Could be plugged injectors, although you should hear them miss at idle, too. At idle, crack each injector line loose at the pump, one at a time. If you hear the engine miss, that injector is working. If it doesn't sound any different, the injector is plugged. If the line is removed, and no fuel shoots out of the pump, that barrel in the pump is bad. Injectors aren't that bad to replace, the pump is another matter. That adds up to some money to rebuild. If the air filters are plugged, I don't think it would miss at wot, only smoke badly. Maybe you have multiple problems.

Well, I'm a little embaressed to even post the fix for this problem. Saturday, I went to try and drag my hayfield with the 1370 and she fell on her face and still smoked black so I gave in and started to dig for a problem other than being simply plugged up from sitting to long. What I found was that the birds had created their own little hotel in my air intake pipe and they had it plugged up solid from the elbow on the bottom all the way up to the air cleaner. It was packed in so tight I had to use a screwdriver to work it all out. Needless to say, after I removed it the darn tractor ran like a top, talk about power! For what it's worth, sorry I wasted your all's time and thanks again for all your replies.

Thanks for your response. I can't hear an audible miss at idle or anytime up until about 1800 rpm but I'll try and listen closer. Do you think the fuel filters or old fuel could cause this? I was told the tractor sat on the dealers lot for 3-4 years. BTW, what is a pump rebuild running these days?

I had my injection pump rebuilt 2 years ago. The cost was near $1000...not very cheap. But, I was told that the pump was in pretty bad shape, including the governor housing that needed to be machined.

I think the Roosa-Master pumps are cheaper to rebuild than the Bosch pumps. The pump on our 1370 is a Bosch. I don't really know what the difference is, other than manufacturers (duh)
